I couldn’t find much information about how this speedo would work on a bike without a battery, but when I got in contact with Jon over at Digital Speedos (who is super helpful, by the way), he seemed to think this speedo would work fine, but may... As I said before, this particular model is what they call the U-type set up, which is effectively the same as the regular non-road worthy version, but with the lights thrown on. The only wiring diagram that I was able to find that was close, given... So I made my way to the other end of the bike and see if I can figure out a way to attach it the rear disk, and would now be making a bracket for it. Fortunately there was quite an obvious and convenient place to locate it on the rear calliper... The plan was to hook it into the wiring going to the number plate lights, as they’re always on. So I wired it up and kicked it over. The plan was to wire it into the existing loom under the seat where the junction is for everything running backwards: tail light, indicators, number plate light. It took me a while to figure it out, but it turns out that half of the wiring on the XR is actually 12V AC. All the lighting is AC, and only the indicator circuit is DC, powered through the Regulator/Rectifier. The bike it’s going on is an Australian XR600, which from what I’ve read has quite a different wiring setup to most of markets that got the XR600. I’ve spent a little time trawling the vast resources of the internet looking for a replacement speedometer for the XR. When the new wheels (17″) go on, the current mechanical speedo will be inaccurate and useless. I couldn’t work out why all the lights were working, but I’m not getting any voltage on the multimeter.
