John Berry's, "A Night of Horrors."
John Berry has written a masterpiece of historical reality woven into the form of a novel. If he had not admitted it, I would have thought it all the work of a trans-dimensional spy. The assassination of Abraham Lincoln has been the subject of numerous literary and historical works; but a novel of the very day with precise historical accuracy is something I have not before encountered. The horror of it all, the reactions of the people involved, and the political relationships of the time are all brought together by Dr. Berry with glorious prose. I put the book down feeling as if I had been there myself, had smelt the smoke and tasted the blood. The assassination of Lincoln has received so much literary attention over the past 146 years; I had doubted anyone could add much to the tale. I was wrong. Dr. John Berry has taken it to a new level with his blending of research and creative license in a completely believable way. Historical novels will never be the same.

History in a fun read
John Berry's historical novel of the assassination of President Lincoln is a gourmet serving. I often felt I was an invisible companion dragged along beside John Wilkes Booth, reading his mind, but unable to influence his actions as he first planned to capture President Lincoln and General Grant, and later as he reshaped his diabolical plan to the assassination. As for Lincoln, history has impressed us with Lincoln's stature and eloquence, but the author also revealed Abraham's humanity. The author's masterful capture of the emotions and insecurities of the leadership of our country during the time of the first assassination of a sitting American president was profound. His telling of so much about other characters critical to this history was both enlightening and entertaining. The tragedy that also befell the person and...

New insight into a tragic event
This book was recommended to me by a long time friend who knew that I would be interested in this "novel" approach to a (the?) defining moment of the 19th century. The book is a page turner, and gave me insight (real or imagined by the novelist) into the thoughts, fears, and emotions of those involved. It is also a great window to the period, less than 150 years ago. The speech patterns, the mannerisms were well caught by Berry. My only complaint was the occasion overuse of a word or phrase, but that is easily overlooked by the high quality of the narrative.I want more.
